Ultrasound is high frequency sound waves produced by a special machine. They can penetrate the skin providing very useful images of the deep tissues within the body. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory medicine that can help relieve pain and inflammation. It can be injected into a joint to help relieve pain, usually in the context of arthritis. This is referred to as "an intra articular cortisone injection". Ultrasound-guided steroid injection is also used to treat other inflammatory conditions like bursitis (inflammation of sac-like fluid collections present in different parts of the body) and tendonitis (tendon inflammation). There is significant evidence that ultrasound guided steroid joint injections provide better levels of pain relief and longer effects compared with injections done without imaging guidance.

Are cortisone injections safe?Steroid joint injections are a safe and effective way of managing extreme pain and inflammation in the joints and tendons. These cortisone injections are given using ultrasound guidance, ensuring that the medication is delivered precisely into the affected area. This ensures fast action, providing you with a longer period of relief from pain so that you can undergo rehab and resume daily life. You may experience some side effects such as minor pain and swelling, along with some bruising at the injection site. Serious side effects are extremely rare with ultrasound-guided steroid injections.

When will I need a steroid joint injection?You will be prescribed a steroid joint injection if you are suffering from extreme pain and inflammation arising from chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis or injuries. The steroid used is a long acting one aiming to reduce the inflammation and provide pain relief for months, A joint injection given with ultrasound ensures precise delivery of the medication. It is important to keep in mind that cortisone injections are only prescribed when other conservative pain management methods fail.
