A knee steroid injection is a common treatment used to relieve pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, tendon irritation, or bursitis around the knee joint. This short video explains what happens on the day of your injection, how the procedure is performed, and what to expect afterward.

Watch Dr Zeid Al-Ani explain what to expect during a knee ultrasound-guided steroid injection, including preparation, how it’s done, and aftercare advice.
What happens before the injection?
Your consultant will discuss your symptoms and medical history, confirm the diagnosis using ultrasound, and explain the potential benefits and risks of the procedure. Consent is taken before the injection starts.
How is a knee ultrasound-guided steroid injection performed?
The area is cleaned with antiseptic solution, and a small amount of numbing medicine is applied. Under ultrasound guidance, the steroid medication is accurately injected into the target area to reduce inflammation.
Is the procedure painful?
Most patients experience only mild discomfort or pressure during the injection. Local anaesthetic is used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
What should I expect afterward?
You may feel some improvement within a few days. Occasionally, mild temporary soreness (a “steroid flare”) can occur for 24–48 hours. You’ll be advised to rest the joint and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day.
Are there any risks?
The risk of infection or bleeding is very small. Some patients may experience a brief increase in pain or mild facial flushing after the injection — these are temporary and usually resolve quickly.
When should I seek medical advice?
If you experience significant redness, swelling, or persistent pain at the injection site, contact the clinic for further assessment.
